Tianeptine: What is Tianeptine?

Tianeptine was discovered in the 1960′s by the French Society of Medical Research. This nootropic is available as a prescription for depression in some countries under the trade names of Coaxil, Stablon, and Tatinol. Despite sharing structural similarities with tricyclic antidepressants, Tianeptine lacks several drawbacks that SSREs carry and has more positive benefits beyond just being an antidepressant.

Tianeptine is a water-soluble nootropic used for its antidepressant and antioxylic qualities. Tianeptine is an SSRE (selective serotonin reuptake enhancer) as opposed to being a SSRI like many anti-depression and anti-anxiety medication. It is suspected that Tianeptine due it being a SSRE lacks adverse side effects such as cardiovascular activity, anticholinergic activies, and being a sedative like most SSRIs. However similiar to SSRIs, Tianeptine onset-of-action takes approximately between 2 to 6 weeks but some benefits have been reported to be observable within the first week of use.

Tianeptine is purported from one study to have plausible benefits in regards to memory and learning abilities through the increase of elastic memory in non-stressed induced patients. By reducing the effects of serotonin in the lymbic system as well as the pre-frontal cortex Tianeptine causes mood elevation compared to the mood depreciating effects common with SSRIs. In one study Tianeptine was found to be also be a plausible treatment for Treatment Resistant Depression (TRD) in conjuncture with or without medication as well as having plausible anticonvulsant and analesgic qualities.

One study conducted with a placebo (saline) and Tianeptine showed that in stress induced mice the Tianeptine showed an improvement in regards to specific areas of the brain. This shows that under a state of stress Tianeptine has plausible neuroprotective qualities in comparison to a Pharmacol Biochem Behav. 2012 Dec;103(2):395-402.Tianeptine exerts neuroprotective effects in the brain tissue of rats exposed to the chronic stress model.

Tianeptine not only has positive benefits in regards to helping treat depression and anxiety which is currently believed to be due to its positive effects stimulating both the AMPA and NMDA, but is believed to have memory protective properties. The article covers a wide area on how this nootropic is as effective as SSRIs in regards for depression, and that due to its ability to block negative effects of stress on hippocampus dominant learning and memory. Tianeptine Dosage

The recommended dosage of Tianeptine is usually 12-36 mg per day, taken as 12mg individual dosages, one in the morning and one in the afternoon and a final in the evening time. This substance is sold in capsule, tablet and powder form.

Does Tianeptine Work?

Tianeptine
has several potential mechanisms of action from the actions on serotonin receptors as well as having possible neuroprotective activities. It also aids in reducing negative effects caused by stress in areas of the brain that are used for memorization and learning properties.

There are still many variables though that have to be looked at with improving cognitive abilities and improving overall mood. As a result, it is very hard to determine just how effective Tianeptine would be for a specific person. It all comes down to their own needs and current cognitive ability, mood, and lifestyle choices.
