Pramiracetam: The Effects, Usages and Dosages

Pramiracetam: What is Pramiracetam?

Pramiracetam: What is Pramiracetam?

Nootropics are a category of chemicals that are referred to as “Smart Drugs,” which are proving to be advantageous as memory, neural, intelligences and cognitive enhancers, that are beneficial as supplements as well as therapeutic in the treating of certain diseases. Pramiracetam is one such Nootropic, defined as a lipid-soluble of the Racetams, which are identified by the sharing of a “pyrrolidone nucleus.” Pramiracetam was patented in Belgium in 1978 and is remarked to be much stronger than its chemical “cousins,” like Aniracetam or Piracetam. Pramiracetam has proven, over the last four decades, to be incredibly beneficial in restoring and maintaining overall health of the human brain.

How does Pramiracetam Work?

Pramiracetam increases the abilities of an individual’s long-term memory and allows knowledge to be recalled with greater ease. The drug presents with high-affinity choline uptake, or HACU, which encourages the synthesis and release of Acetylcholine to the Hippocampus of the brain. Like many within the category of nootropic, their brain empowering properties are being applied to a number of severe conditions that negatively affect memory and brain function. Pramiracetam has shown to be beneficial in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, as well as, other forms of senile dementia. The medication is already being studied as a therapeutic response to traumatic brain injuries. Thus far the studies are proving to be promising (Meehan, 2011).

Negative Side Effects and Short or Long Term Effects

Granted, with any medication or therapy, no matter how beneficial, one has to consider the short term, long term, and negative side effects that much be considered. In the case of Pramiracetam, the effects and benefits have proven to be beneficial. It is showing explicit results in treating injury and acting as an “antioxidant” on the brain. There is even research being done to prove that doses of Pramiracetam may be able to eliminate and repair much of the damage of the brain caused by excessive alcohol consumption. Racetam based nootropics are not considered in any way to be toxic, but there are a few minor side effects worthy of note. Headaches, anxiety, nervousness and fatigue may be experienced, but they are easily addressed and treated.

Benefits and Positive Effects

The research into the potential of Smart Drugs, like Pramiracetam is advantageous and worthwhile. These drugs, with low dangers, to adults suffering from mentally debilitating conditions, like Dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, and any number of brain injuries can be life-changing and incredibly beneficial. The side effects seem minor and easily avoided. Clearly, it may not be beneficial in the long run for children and their developing brains, but the opportunity of life quality that it can add for the elderly is indispensable. Of course, as with any drug or treatment, one must continue endeavors to maintain the safety of this drug. Pramiracetam and the other “Smart Drugs” will likely be included in many medical treatments in the future.

Additional Information on Pramiracetam

Pramiracetam was first patented in the United States in 1979. Many researchers believe that Pramiracetam’s potency is in the range of 10 to 15 times stronger than that of Piracetam. This nootropic has also been shown to be the most lipophilic, allowing it to be absorbed much more rapidly through the lipid bi-layers than the other racetams.

There have been many studies that have explored the potentiality of Pramiracetam being used as a treatment for concussions, Alzheimer’s, as well as senile dementia. Clinical studies have shown several specific therapeutic activities affected by alterations of the cognitive functions. Long-term memory improvement has been seen as well as learning, attention span, concentration, alertness, and an increase in the rate of high-affinity choline uptake in the hippocampus.

Pramiracetam is a lipid-soluble nootropic of the Racetam chemical family, and has a relatively similar chemical structure compared to its cousin Aniracetam. However, this nootropic is much stronger than Aniracetam. Pramiracetam has the capabilities of increasing the long-term memory of individuals, allowing obtained information and knowledge to be recalled more easily. Considering that the high-affinity choline uptake (HACU) is increased implies an increase in the synthesis and release of Acetylcholine. The information shows how this smart drug increases both the Hippocampal Acetylcholine activity and the learning and memory encoding process.

A study found that this specific nootropic could help improve memory and delayed recall in young men with memory and cognitive problems caused by head injury or anoxia. The study was against a placebo, and showed that not only was Pramiracetam safe but also effective during the 18-month period as well as a month after the Pramiracetam‘s usage was halted. Brain Inj. 1991 Oct-Dec; 5(4): 375-80. Placebo-controlled study of pramiracetam in young males with memory and cognitive problems resulting from head injury and anoxia.

Pramiracetam not only helps improve the cognitive functionality of a mind but has also been shown to exhibit an inhibitory action against platelet hyperactivity under the conditions of chronic hyperglycemia. Eksp Klin Farmakol. 2012; 75(4): 38-41 [Platelet hyperreactivity and anti-aggregator properties of nootropic drugs under conditions of alloxan-induced diabetes in rats].

Pramiracetam Dosage

The recommended dosage of Pramiracetam is usually 600-900 mg per day, taken as 300 mg individual dosages, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. This supplement is sold in capsule, tablet and powder form. The traditional dosage for any given patient averages no more than 1200 mg dosage each day, often separated into 2 or 3 doses. This dosage appears to be the most beneficial; however, it has yet to be determined if higher doses may be more or less advantageous (Frank 2014).

Does Pramiracetam Work?

Pramiracetam has several potential mechanisms of action from the increase of the High-Affinity Choline Uptake, to the possibility of acting on a peripheral site which relies on the Adrenal glands, as well as the restoration of membrane fluidity allowing more efficient and effective cell signaling.

There are still many variables though that have to be looked at with improving cognitive abilities. As a result, it is very hard to determine just how effective this nootropic would be for a specific person. It all comes down to their own needs and current cognitive ability as well as lifestyle choices. Pramiracetam is similar in nature to piracetam, although more potent. It is said to enhance memory and cognitive function.
