In this fast-paced, modern world there is a demand on people to be able to think fast on their feet and multi-task for efficiency in almost any field of employment; from medical professionals to a minimum-wage food service worker. That need to keep up, compete and achieve is reflected on college campuses all over the country. The need to get the highest grades and write the best papers; after all, that is the only way to compete in modern America. Students, professionals and lay people alike all may want to improve their performance. Nootropics are family of drugs that have gained a lot of attention and showing a great deal of popular use. Each of the drugs in what is known as, the racetam family, are all derived from the initial nootropic, piracetam. These drugs work to enhance the memory and mental acuity, in one way or another, which has made them very popular among college students. Recently, one of the nootropic of note has been Fasoracetam, or its proper name “5-[(piperidin-1-yl)carbonyl]pyrrolidin-2-one”, which is a bit of a mouthful (Rajaganapathy and et. al, 5127). This particular racetam, known as fasoracetam, is proving to be quite promising.


Despite what the public may believe, Fasoracetam was originally discovered and tested in the early 1900s. In clinical terms, Fasoracetam effects not only the acetylcholine; it also affects receptors in the brain, particularly in the cerebral cortex. Neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid or GABA is some examples of what fasoracetam acts on. Fasoracetam is a highly potent racetam, far stronger than its parent drug piracetam. The popularity of this supplemental drug is known to increase one’s focus, enhance memory, increase learning ability, act as an anti-depressant or anxiolytic and prevent “learning loss.” In other words, it helps prevent the loss of cognitive skills and information recall. However, there are a number of side-effects that must also be acknowledged. Like many other nootropics, Fasoracetam has not been approved or regulated by the FDA, or entirely, encouraged by the medical community. It can be hard to acquire and is incredibly costly. Even so, the most relevant side effect is those that are unknown. Thus far, all the effectiveness, success, and benefits of Fasoracetam have not been widely studied, and this leaves a certain amount caution necessary when deciding to ingest it.


Like many of the nootropics, this member of the racetam family has been studied in controlled settings and there does appear to be a distinct benefit to patients of diseases and conditions that affect the brain and memory. Fasoracetam has proven to show benefit for people suffering from conditions like schizophrenia (Froestl, Muhs and Pfeifer 793). However, there are other studies that show that the greatest benefit of Fasoracetam can be seen in patients with Alzheimer’s Disease, helping to reduce the expected loss of mental acuity and memory. Presently, there are more studies being done to determine if Fasoracetam may be a beneficial treatment for some of the young patients who are affected by the varying degree from Attention Deficit Disorder or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or as they are more commonly known, ADD and ADHD. According to researchers, while non-human tests, specifically those performed on laboratory rats, there have yet to be enough definitive human trials to ensure or guarantee is benefits overall. The rats showed a greater amount of stamina in dangerous situations, like drowning or evading electric shock.


Because the research and testing into Fasoracetam are not yet definitive, understanding the advisable dosage is varied. In fairness, the research has shown that fasoracetam seems to be safe for human consumption with no worrisome side effects. Experts offer this safeness has been seen in patients a daily dose of 100 mg appears to be effective; however, others suggest a smaller dose is more advisable and still shows a positive increase in mental and brain function that is most desired. That said until greater research, and studies are dedicated to the benefits and risks associated with these drugs, both as a treatment for disease, but, also, for supplemental use by the average day-to-day citizen. Like any substance, be they medication or a supplement, should be regarded seriously before one considers using them, even once, let alone daily. In fairness, the Nootropic class of racetam drugs do appear to be relatively safe and are proving to boast a number of medical benefits, which deems continuing research into the field remains worthwhile.


Again, everyone wants to be smarter or, at least, feel like they are. Fasoracetam is highly attractive to college students and anyone who has a fast-paced life that calls for multi-tasking. Many want to get ahead, retain more information, maintain the knowledge they gather and have a good recall of everything that they need to recall. In the case of illness or the diseases of aging, like dementia or Alzheimer’s Disease, a racetam solution may help them to keep their memories as they age and maintain their self-sufficiency in the same vein, children with ADD or ADHD can be helped to develop their focus and ability to control their own behaviors. That said the racetam chemicals, like Fasoracetam, may play a definitive part in the treatment of a number of diseases and conditions that many struggle with today and in the future. Even so, there is still research to be done, tests to be conducted and human trials to be considered. However, if these tests, studies and considerations prove to be as promising as they appear to then, again, the research is valid and more than worthy of further and future uses of fasoracetam.
